How Does the Fraxel Laser Treatment Work?

Fraxel® DUAL laser treatment targets aging and sun-damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into your skin to expedite your body’s remodeling of collagen. And since the laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes very rapid healing. Fraxel® DUAL treatment resurfaces your skin by stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin cells from the inside out.

The Fraxel laser penetrates deep into the epidermis and causes micro-injuries. That may sound scary and undesirable, but it’s actually a good thing! The body responds to those tiny injuries by ramping up its natural repair processes.

In addition to sending more blood flow and nutrients to the damaged area, the body also takes its collagen production up a notch. The additional collagen helps plump and firm the skin while increasing its youthful elasticity. So, by damaging the skin, the Fraxel laser makes it possible for the body to replace the damaged portions with stronger, healthier, and more vibrant cells.

What to Expect During Fraxel Resurfacing

The actual Fraxel procedure is fairly quick and only takes about 20 minutes to perform. However, before treatment officially begins, your provider will numb the treatment area with a topical cream. It can take up to 45 minutes for the numbing agent to set in, so your entire appointment could take just over an hour. Most patients tolerate the treatment quite well once they’re fully numb.

To begin the Fraxel laser treatment, your provider will gently swipe a handheld laser device across the desired treatment areas. Each treatment area will receive four passes of the laser wand to ensure optimal results.

The laser itself is hot to the touch, but a cooling air hose attached to the device helps prevent the skin from getting too hot. At the end of the treatment, you’ll receive ice packs to reduce swelling and soothe your skin.

Reapply moisturizer throughout the day as needed to prevent your complexion from drying out. Don’t rub any products into your skin until it’s fully healed.

Since the Fraxel laser removes the outermost layers of your epidermis, you need to protect your skin before going out in the sun. Always apply a quality, non-comedogenic sunscreen to prevent burning your delicate complexion. Excessive, unprotected sun exposure at this point could result in more hyperpigmentation problems and other indications of UV damage.

It’s natural for the skin to develop pinpoint dark scabs within the first few days of treatment. Avoid picking, scratching, or rubbing at the scabs. They’ll fall off on their own within a few days and reveal the fresh, glowing skin hiding underneath.
