Laser hair removal requires a series of treatments that are based on several factors:

Proper aftercare is essential to achieving the best results and minimizing irritation following your laser hair removal treatment at Azul Medspa.

Avoid Sun Exposure

In addition to avoiding direct sunlight before your session, we strongly recommend staying out of the sun for at least six weeks after treatment. Laser-treated skin becomes more sensitive and vulnerable to UV damage. Sun exposure during this time can lead to complications like hyperpigmentation, blistering, or prolonged redness. If you must be outside, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and protective clothing to shield the treated area.

Expect Mild Redness and Sensitivity

It’s completely normal for the skin to feel warm or appear slightly sunburned for up to 24–48 hours post-treatment. This is a sign that the laser energy has effectively targeted the hair follicles. To soothe any discomfort, we recommend:

  • Applying cool compresses or ice packs as needed
  • Using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to hydrate the skin
  • Avoiding hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24–48 hours

Skincare & Makeup Tips

You may apply makeup to cover any temporary redness. Make sure to use clean brushes and non-comedogenic products to avoid irritation. Avoid harsh exfoliants, scrubs, or active skincare ingredients (such as retinol or glycolic acid) on the treated area for at least 5–7 days after treatment.

Let the Hair Shed Naturally

You might notice hair shedding over the next 1–2 weeks. This is expected and means the laser has done its job. Avoid plucking, waxing, or tweezing. It is best to just let the hair fall out on its own. Shaving between sessions is fine if needed.

Laser Hair Removal works best with darker haired patients. Because the primary target in hair follicles is melanin pigment (dark pigment), less laser energy is absorbed by the skin and more by the hair follicle. Tanned skin also “robs” laser energy as it passes through the skin to the hair follicle. Because the pigment in the hair is the target for the laser energy, gray or white hair (which lacks pigment) cannot be effectively treated with any laser or light-based device.

How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal El Paso Appointment

We recommend avoiding waxing, electrolysis, and plucking your hair for at least six weeks before your appointment. These processes remove the roots of your hair for a period of time. You need to keep your hair roots intact so that the laser hair removal process can work effectively. If you remove your hair roots before your appointment, your treatment results could be negatively impacted.

We also recommend avoiding excessive sunlight for six weeks before your treatment. Sun exposure can make your skin ultra-sensitive to the laser we use to remove hair. It can therefore increase your risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, or scarring. If you can’t avoid the sun for six weeks prior to treatment, we recommend always wearing high-quality sunscreen. Look for a product that blocks both UVB and UVA rays. You can also further protect your skin by wearing brimmed hats or loose, long-sleeved clothing.

Laser Hair Removal Side Effects

Slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn, may occur in some clients. These effects are typically gone within a few hours, however they could last up to 24 hours. How is Laser Hair Removal different from electrolysis?

Electrolysis is an antiquated and much slower process. During electrolysis a needle is actually inserted into each hair follicle, one at a time, over and over again. Each time it is inserted, an electric shock burns the follicle to retard hair growth. Laser Hair Removal uses the cool light of the laser to scan the treatment area, identify the hair follicle and within minutes all of the hairs in the laser’s beam are treated. Multiple laser treatments are necessary for best results. Approximately 9-12 treatments every 4-6 weeks will be necessary for satisfactory, long-lasting results.*

Virtually all areas of the body can be treated and all hair types can be treated. However, it is unlikely that red, blonde, or gray hair will achieve optimum results.

There are certain medical conditions and medications that preclude patients from laser treatment.
